The Steamboat Wranglers Junior Hockey Team took away a pair of big wins this weekend, defeating defending league champion Pikes Peak Miners.
In the first game on Friday night, the Wranglers kept control throughout the match-up, winning 8-2. The first period saw the Wranglers scoring three goals, and the team put in five more goals in the second period. Shawn Catudal had two of those goals, along with two assists on the night.
Saturday’s game was much closer, with a goal again by Catudal, and a second goal by his roommate, Braeden Gillmore. Jacob May scored for Pikes Peak with four minutes left in the game, putting the pressure on the Wranglers. The Miners pulled their goalie late when the Wranglers had two players in the box resulting in a six-on-three. A last second shot by the Miners hit the crossbar, ending the game 2-1 for the Wranglers.
The Miners (26-8-0-0) came into the weekend atop the Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League standing, but the Wranglers (27-7-0-1) now lead by three points with Pikes Peak having a game at-hand.
The Steamboat Wranglers are home again this weekend, with two games against the Colorado Rampage. The puck drops at 8 PM Friday and 7 PM on Saturday.
