The Breckenridge Bolts squared off in a weekend three game set against the Colorado Thunderbirds in Denver this past weekend with the bolts desperately needing some points to improve their standing in the RMJHL.
The Bolts tried to avoid another one of what are becoming regular slow starts. On Friday night they managed to avoid a slow start but didn't manage to exit the first period with the score on their side as they gave up two goals late in the first period less than a minute apart. The T-birds would strike once more in the second period before the Bolts found their stride as Luke Noble and Breck Native Sean Costello got the bolts rolling to cut the birds lead to one goal.
The Bolts Leveled the Score a mere 34 seconds into the second period as Hunter Havice got the Bolts back to even assisted by Jack Rousseau and Sean Costello. The Thunderbirds would retake the lead shortly thereafter but the bolts would answer back almost immediately as Hunter Havice would score his second of the night to tie the game at 4. For the first time this season the Bolts would head to overtime against the thunderbirds, but despite Vail native Goalie Declan Rooney's stellar 46-save performance the Thunderbirds would get the last laugh as they scored the game winner halfway through the extra frame.
Saturday the Bolts came back with renewed purpose and quickly jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first period thanks to goals from Tanner Caldarola and Hunter Havice. Despite this good start the Thunderbirds would answer back with less than a minute to go in the 1st period. to cut the lead to just 2-1.
The second period would prove to be all Thunderbirds as they scored twice, once on the power play to take a 3-2 lead going into the third period. Not to be outdone, the Bolts as they always do, came out flying in the third as Tanner Caldarola and Jack Rousseau both scored for the Bolts as they would tie the game at 4-4 and send the fourth game in as many games for the Bolts to overtime and then eventually a shootout as Declan Rooney and Sean Costello would lead the Bolts to victory.
The Bolts shootout victory would mean that they would play a rubber match vs the Thunderbirds for the weekend series on sunday. Just like saturday the Bolts would strike first as Gavyn Entzminger opened the scoring in the first period off a faceoff win and a puck put on net. Captain Austin Westbrook would then extend the lead to 2-0 in the second period. However, this Bolts dominance would be short lived as the thunderbirds scored three goals in 10 minutes to take the lead going into the final period.
The Bolts would answer the bell and tie the game just less than five minutes into the second period as they scored on an odd man rush coming off a defensive zone faceoff. Breckenridge took the lead back later in the period as forward Tanner Caldarola wheeled out of the corner and into the slot uncontested and scored upstairs to help the Bolts regain the lead.
From there it was all Bolts defensively as goalie Declan Rooney and his D-corps closed out the win as the Bolts began their first winning streak of the new year.
