After a difficult opening Friday night in the RMJHL championship series, Steamboat goaltender Cole Kohut rebounded with 31 saves to force a final game three in Colorado Springs Sunday afternoon. Wranglers forward Kameron Fink started fast with two goals in the first five minutes of play, and his team never looked back. Fink fittingly recorded the hat-trick with an empty net short-handed goal before the final buzzer.
Like Friday night, Steamboat controlled the time of possession throughout the game, once again rattling off 53 shots. Miners standout goaltender Erik Anderson kept his team in the contest recording 49 saves, but he didn't get the offensive output needed to finish the series off in two games. Sean Moliskchi closed the door at the 14:08 mark of the third period, notching Steamboat's fourth goal. Fink finished the game in MVP fashion with five points (3 goals, 2 assists).
Both teams return to Sertich Arena for a decisive third and final game at 2:30 pm. In the best of three series, Pikes Peak won the first game Friday night 9-4. The Steamboat Wranglers, who defeated the defending league champion Aspen Leafs on their home ice in the semi-final round, are playing their first season in the RMJHL. Last season in overtime the Miners lost to Aspen in the inaugural championship game. The winner Sunday will be the second team to hoist the coveted RMJHL Championship Cup.
